Before you can even schedule the PMP exam, PMI needs to confirm you're eligible — and the requirements trip up more candidates at the application stage than at the exam itself. Here's the complete checklist for 2026.

The two eligibility paths

Both paths lead to the exact same certification — there's no "lesser" PMP depending on which path you took. The degree path simply requires less documented experience because a completed degree is treated as a form of demonstrated foundational preparation.

What actually counts as "project experience"

This is where most eligibility confusion happens. PMI isn't asking whether your job title contained the word "project" — it's asking whether you performed the work of leading and directing project tasks: defining scope, managing a schedule or budget, coordinating a team or stakeholders toward a defined outcome, and being accountable for results. That work can come from:

• A formal project management role
• A "coordinator," "analyst," "lead," or similar title where you genuinely directed project tasks, not just supported someone else's
• Volunteer or unpaid project work, documented the same way as paid experience
• Work across industries — PMI doesn't require project management experience in any specific sector

What generally doesn't count: pure task execution with no leadership or coordination responsibility, or administrative support work with no accountability for project outcomes.

The 8-year window, explained

Your qualifying experience has to fall within the 8 consecutive years immediately before you submit your application — not 8 years total across your career. If you led projects a decade ago but nothing since, that older experience doesn't count toward eligibility, even if it would otherwise qualify. This trips up candidates returning to project work after a long gap in a different role.

The 35-hour training requirement

Separate from your work experience, PMI requires 35 contact hours of formal project management education. This has to be documented (a certificate of completion, typically), and it's the one requirement fully waived if you already hold an active CAPM certification — the CAPM's own prerequisites cover this ground already.

Application audits: what to expect

PMI randomly selects a percentage of applications for audit after submission. If yours is selected, you'll need:

• Contact information for supervisors/managers who can verify each project experience entry
• Proof of your 35 training hours (certificate of completion)

The practical implication: gather this documentation before you apply, not after PMI flags your application. Candidates who scramble to track down a former manager's contact details during an active audit often lose weeks they didn't need to lose — a five-minute documentation habit while the details are fresh saves real time later.
